Re-working a Surface Pattern Design

For the past 18 months or so I have been a sponge soaking up all that I can about surface pattern design. I’ve been taking classes, listening to podcasts, reading blogs and articles and I just can’t get enough. I know I need to move forward instead of backward but something about this collection told me I could do better, so I set out to rework it.

With encouragement from the masters at Textile Design Lab they thought I could add to this collection even more after showing them this one that I reworked. I thought it very interesting that the grid that I added was a favorite with the professionals but when asking on Instagram it wasn’t. They (all of two out of three) liked the original shown on my journal post here:

Surface Pattern Design Collaboration

I’m learning a lot about what I like and what I want to design for as I continue this surface pattern design journey. I do know that because of my ‘wearable art’ background I want to design textiles for fashion first then home decor.

It seems as though I learn something new and wonderful everyday and I just love that. I like patterns that have lots of layers and texture, that is my goal to do that well. Only one of these have layers and I’m pretty happy with it. This is the one that I re-worked giving it some more interest and me learning along the way.

The additional piece to this collection it the oak leaves and small red flowers. I’m enjoying playing with more vibrant colors.

I think this would be a beautiful fall season addition to home decor; table cloth, tea towels, napkins, even pillows would be nice.

This is all four of pieces together:
