Speedy Design Challenge

A Textile Design Lab speedy design challenge is a pattern design brief for members of TDL. The speedy design challenge is to create a pattern following the brief and doing it in a days time. If creating the pattern on that day doesn’t work in your schedule of course a member can create it when it does.

Blue Poppies

When I saw this brief I immediately thought of blue poppies for this speedy design challenge. I looked on Pinterest for some photos because I’ve not seen a blue poppy in real life before. I then began to draw some flowers with leaves, stems, and buds. When I’m painting botanicals I usually am very detail oriented but knowing the goal was to create this in a day I tried not to be too detailed.

Speedy Design Challenge

The drawing, painting, and uploading them into Photoshop took the entire day. Practice, practice, practice as they say. I really loved the way the motifs came out so I was still determined to finish the pattern design even though I knew it wouldn’t be done in a day. What I have done in the past which, I had forgotten about was to design the pattern on paper before going to Photoshop with the motifs. I think this helps to have a better idea of the outcome then to do too much designing in Photoshop. I added a background texture and the repeat and called it complete. This speedy design challenge wasn’t so speedy but I was happy with a two day completion. Next time it will be a little closer.

Thank you to the TDL design community for some constructive ideas to change on my design to make it better, this is the finished pattern design. I really love the vintage look that this pattern design has and I can see it used for fashion or home decor.

I plan to add a couple of companions to it soon and will re-post when I do, stay tuned by signing up for my newsletter below or above this post.
